ELMER LEON SMITH

Elmer Leon Smith, 78 of Detroit, passed away Friday, May 4, 2018 in his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral services have been set for Monday, May 7, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church Detroit with Rev. Doug Higdon officiating.  Interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service time at the church. Wood Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

He was born on February 19, 1940 in Pinhook, Texas to Fred and Elva Lee Barnett Smith. On June 18, 1963 he married Mary Myers in Hugo, Oklahoma.

He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Mary; seven children, Becky Holmes (Jody), Susie Barnes (Tracy), Connie Phosay (Bo), Freda Smith (Greg Clark), Vincent Smith (Stefani Fox), Kristina Story (Matt), Josephine Blassengame (Michael); grandchildren, Rachel (William), Jennifer (David), Jacob (Shelby), Steffanie (Aaron), Kevin, Megan, Lilly, Kaylee, Victoria, Jessica, TJ, Dakota, Kanyon, Madison, Tali, Jayson, Hunter and Ashton; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Sophia and Lincoln; sisters, Lois Nowlin, Virginia Farris (Robert); brother, Ronnie Smith; sisters-in-law, Josie (Jack), Velma (Don), Jacquita (Dale); brother-in-law, Sam Myers (Sherri); many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by his parents, Fred and Elva Lee Smith; sisters, Joyce Harp, Karen Sotelo; brothers, Kenneth, Larry, Odell, Cecil, Denny, L.C. and Jackie Steve; brothers-in-law, Max Nowlin, Richard Harp, Don Miller and Johnny Myers; grandson, Devin Story; great-grandson, Oakland Phosay.

Serving as Pallbearers will be Tracy Barnes, Bo Phosay, David Guyman, William Vaughn, Kevin Janett and Jacob Phosay.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Vincent Smith, Jody Holmes, Greg Clark, Matt Story, Michael Blassingame and T.J. Barnes.
