Elva Cox Obituary

Elva Joyce Wilson Cox, 91 of Johntown, left the loving arms of her children on July 11, 2020 at 10:00 PM to join the loving arms of her beloved Savior, Jesus our Lord.

Joyce was the youngest of eleven children born on March 4, 1929, in Lubbock, Texas, to Victor Britten Hugo Wilson and Cleada Ethel Kelsoe Wilson.

She was a daughter of a tomato farmer, raised in the Johntown and Rosalie communities. During the depression era they made annual trips to west Texas to pull cotton bolls and visit family living in the area.  She loved being with all her family, especially her nieces and nephews that were so near her age.  Her best friend Doris Dempsey introduced her to her boyfriend's younger brother, Tommie Lee Cox.  It was love at first sight. They married August 21, 1947 near Bogata by Reverend A.I. Bond. They settled in Johntown where they raised their beloved children.  She was an excellent seamstress, making clothes for herself and her children. Joyce also enjoyed hand embroidery, crocheting, reading, and loved raising flowers.  She also loved to sing, always having a song in her heart.  She was a devoted wife ensuring that breakfast was prepared at 5:30 am for Tommie to send him off to work and ensured supper was on the table at 5:30 pm when he arrived home. Such was the life of a rural housewife; her priorities were her husband and children, caring for them with love and attention.

She was baptized into the Christian faith at an early age and was a member of the Johntown Missionary Baptist Church and actively involved in the Ladies' Auxiliary.  She was also a lifelong member of the Disabled American Veteran's Auxiliary.

Joyce is survived by her daughters Glenda Joyce Cox of Johntown, Cynthia Lea Robertson and husband Gary of Paris, and by her sons Victor Lynn Cox and wife Patsy of Paris, and Tommie Eugene Cox and wife Pat of Detroit; sisters-in-law, Libby Moore and Husband Ed of Slaton, Bobbie Hervey of Johntown, Sue Huffman of Bogata , and life-long sister friend Doris Dempsey Cox of Littlefield; 12 grandchildren, Sean Robertson, and Steven Robertson of Paris, Tracy Cox Bacile and husband Rob of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Patti Cox Reese and husband James of Rockport, Texas, Andy Cox and wife Erin of Denton, Texas, Dustin Cox of Paris, Texas, Frankie Bush of Rosalie, Kelly Bush Lindsey and husband Joe of Bogata, Wyatt Bush and wife Tammy of Bogata, Angela Cox Gonzales and husband Manuel of Detroit, David Bush and wife Susan of Paris, Lore Lane Jones and husband Michael of Honey Grove; 26 great-grandchildren; and many extended great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and 1 great-granddaughter Jacqueline Danielle Crump, her siblings, Virgie Shirey, Hobert Wilson, Gladys Lewis, Ida Bell Elliot, George Steven Wilson, Woodrow Wilson, Henery Olen Wilson, Vivion Elliott, Betty T Evans and Donald Wilson.

Honorary Pallbearers; Sean Robertson, Steven Robertson, Andy Cox, Dustin Cox, Frankie Bush, Wyatt Bush and David Bush.

One trait she has left with her family is not only the gift of love, but of laughter, or as she says, giggles over the simplest of things.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 14, 2020 in the chapel at Wood-Haggard Funeral Home-Bogata.  Interment will be in the Bogata Cemetery.
