Gordon VanDeaver

Joseph Gordon VanDeaver of Pattonville, Texas, age 85, passed suddenly on Wednesday evening, August 10, 2022. He died doing what he loved, tending to his cattle in Fulbright, Texas nearby to his birthplace.

He was born on February 28, 1937, in Lone Star, Texas. Affectionally known as “Gordon” he was one of four boys born to Thomas Manary and Thelma Alllie (Hastings) VanDeaver.

Gordon was a retired USDA  inspector, 1956 Deport High School graduate, and Sam Houston State Class of 1959. He was a member of the Faith Presbyterian Church in Paris, Texas, a member of the Sons of the Confederacy, Master Naturalist, the Red River Genealogical Society, and the Bethel Cemetery Board. He was also a proud member of the Sam Houston State “Farm Boys” association.

Gordon is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years and mother of his children, Helen Fay VanDeaver, and by his three brothers, Clovis, Alvin and Charles VanDeaver.

Left to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy are his son, James Gordon and wife Viviana VanDeaver of Paris, Texas; his daughter Charlotte Fay and husband Tony Velasco of Austin, Texas; one granddaughter, Alita Velasco also of Austin, Texas; his wife, Phyllis; and nieces and nephews he loved dearly.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday August 13, 2022, in the chapel at Wood-Haggard Funeral Home – Deport.  Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
