Beloved mother, grandmother and schoolteacher, Mary Margaret Vaughan of Bogata passed away peacefully Saturday July 29, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Cuthand, Texas on January 30, 1935, the only child of William “Clifford” and Laura (Croom) Barnard.
Mary married Avret Lynn Vaughan on April 15, 1958, in west Texas after eloping. Mary was a member of the First Methodist Church of Bogata and later attended Bogata Missionary Baptist Church with her children when her health began to fail. She taught school at Bogata Elementary from 1972 until her retirement in 1989. Mary was an avid reader and a longtime member of the Bogata Book Club. She was the recipient of the Presidents Service Award for countless hours of volunteer work. Her “work “ was to have the lights, air and have the doors unlocked, and Sunday bulletins ready to go for Sunday morning worship. Mary was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family.
Left to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy are her three children, William Jeffery Vaughan of Bogata, Texas, Laura and her husband Albert McCoin of Detroit, Texas and Mary Lynn and her husband Kenneth Palmer of Bogata, Texas; grandchildren, Christina Heichelheim, Joey McCoin, Andrea Martin, Kara Baca, Megan Hightower, Adam Horn, Aaron Palmer, William Vaughan, Colby Horn, Julie McCoin and Aubrey Herring; her 20 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Lawrence and his wife Helen Vaughan of Overton, Texas; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Crawford of Paris and Mary Ann Ward of Henderson, Texas; special cousins, Pam, Wanda June, Mitzi, Lou Beth and Linda, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Avret Lynn Vaughan, granddaughter, Valerie Vaughan, and grandson, Richard McCoin.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 PM Friday, August 4, 2023, at the First Methodist Church of Bogata. Pastor Susan Leddy, Bro. Joey Williams, and Tracey Williams will officiate. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Bogata Cemetery. Bearers will be David Rozell, Russell Rozell, Todd Williams Ricky Cheatwood, Bruce Whitten, and Johnny Puckett. Honorary Bearers will be her grandsons. The family will receive friends Thursday evening 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Wood- Haggard Funeral Home Chapel.
