Ruthie Irene Sheffield

Ruthie was born to Josie Williams White and Rufus White in Cuthand, Texas on March 12, 1922, and passed away peacefully on October 12, 2020 in Clarksville, TX at the age of 98.

She was the wife of her late husband, Samuel D. Sheffield, of Bogata, TX  

Ruthie worked hard her whole life: she picked cotton, worked in factories, cooked, sewed – worked the cows and took care of everyone.  She truly had the gift of hospitality.  If you ever left her home hungry – that was on you!  She could and did feed many people at one time like it was no big deal – and her fried pies were something to wait for!  She loved working her garden, canning, fishing, bingo and the casino – not necessarily in that order! 

Trying to sum up a life of almost 100 years is difficult.  Stories are abundant – She was a role model for many – and when I think how the world changed in 98 years…. I see just how cool she really was.  Until she was no longer able – she stayed current with news, music and all that was going on around her.   She will be missed terribly.

Ruthie was preceded in death by her husband Samuel D Sheffield of Bogata; sons, Tommy Cruce of Cuthand, and Joe Cruce of Bogata; sisters, Marie Carr, Dee Martin, Rose McCall; brothers, Eugene White, Fred White, Otha White, Johnny White and Warren White

She is survived by daughters-in-law, Lorraine Cruce of Grand Prairie and Linda Cruce of Bogata;  grandchildren, Michelle (Marty) Hilgendorf of Krum, Darrell (Janice) Fournier of Waxahachie, Joel (Elena) Cruce of Dallas, Beth (David) Felton of Grand Prairie and Jay Cruce of Grand Prairie; 8 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews – all who loved her very much.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, October 16, 2020 at the Cuthand Cemetery.  No formal visitation will be held.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the Clarksville Nursing Home that took care of her for these last few years.  Memorials may be made to the Cuthand Cemetery in care of Jan Hammond 5797 FM 910 Clarksville, Texas 75426.
